Dress code

Reading: Matthew 22:11-14

“… Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ….” Romans 13:14

The passage about the wedding guest being banished for not wearing the appropriate costume baffled me for a long time.  What if he were poor and could not afford the proper clothes?

Thankfully I got some explanation from my life application study Bible (Tyndale 2005):

“It was customary for wedding guests to be given garments to wear to the banquet.  It was unthinkable to refuse to wear these garments.  That would insult the host, who could only assume that the guest was arrogant and thought he didn’t need these garments, or that he did not want to take part in the wedding celebration.”  So there.  No excuse.

‘Think all roads lead to Rome (not to mention the kingdom of heaven)?

“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” – John 14:6.
