Reading: Matthew 5-7
I was thinking, what a wonderful teacher we have in Jesus! Just like his disciples, a lot of us grew up in church but still believe in teachings wrongly interpreted from the Bible. That was why teaching was an important part of Jesus’ mission—to rebuff man-made rules (sadly, devised by religious leaders) which were in direct contrast to the word of God.
Don’t we love it when Jesus starts with “You have heard that it was said….” and then suddenly negates it with “But I tell you….”! Suddenly, there’s clarity! Suddenly there’s release from a very heavy burden. Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30? “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (NIV) The Jesus way is the easy way!
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a man who built his house on the rock.” – Matthew 7:24 (NIV)
How reassuring! To know that nothing that anybody says would shake me, as long as I’m holding on to what Jesus says! When in doubt of what I should do, when I’m made to doubt of my salvation—all I have to do is to turn to Jesus’ word and to His promises. Hallelujah!
“When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority….” – Matthew 7:28-29 (NIV)
